Poblano has written an important piece of information: It is democrats more than Republicans who are swayed by the muslim/terrorist smears of Obama.
He says
Belief that Obama is Muslim is Durable, Bipartisan - but Most Likely to Sway Democratic Votes.
Also, an earlier post on Poblano's site by Nate detailed how racist democratic opponents of Obama have been pushing some of the smears.
This is actionable information. (jump)
The point is that these democratic voters - who support Obama's positions but are susceptible to racist appeals and smears - are in fact persuadable democrats.
I don't ever expect to convince a Fox news rapid Republican to vote for Obama. But for that universe of low information democratic voters - who responded during the primary to the dog whistles about race -- are eminently persuadable.
Not all of them, obviously, but enough of them to help neutralize this threat.
This information suggests that an important target of voter contact and outreach are low information democratic voters - who need to be innoculated against the smears.
It says to me that the smears not only must be countered, but must be publicly fought in every way because the prize is not correcting what radical republicans such as drudge and fox et al think. The prize is getting democratic support up to 85-90%. This is doable.
Thanks to Poblano for pointing out this fact.
